Description
The Midland Bank is a building constructed from Portland stone, featuring a green slate recessed mansard roof and tall stone-corniced red brick stacks at the north and east ends. It is one storey and an attic high, designed in a French 18th century style. The building has a recessed curved entry at the southeast corner, a three-bay front facing High Street, and a similar two-bay front on Eben's Lane.
The arched windows are set in channelled rusticated surrounds with keystones, elevated on a high plinth that supports pairs of Ionic columns. There is a full entablature, cornice, and parapet with balustrading above each window. Each front features a single central bulls-eye dormer. The cornice and plinth at the corner entry are stepped back, with channelled rustication above the plinth level, an ornate doorcase, and a blank plaque above that interrupts the main entablature. Above the cornice, there is an ornate open-pedimental clock aedicule with relief-carved pilasters, a festoon below the clock, and a cartouche above. The doorcase is adorned with a laurel-leaf architrave, a deep frieze with festoons beside a carved head, and large flanking console brackets topped with a cornice.
Rainwater heads at the ends of each front are dated 1914. However, all window glazing, doors, and interior fittings have been altered, and the plinth and third window on the High Street front have been cut; the window above has been modified for a cash dispenser.
