Description

This is a small farmhouse, likely dating back to the 17th century, although it incorporates medieval roof timbers possibly as early as 1450. The exterior is painted roughcast, with a double-fronted appearance and a 19th-century slate roof. There are end chimney stacks, a larger one on the north end. A rear outshut has been added, along with two 20th-century dormers on the rear elevation and a porch. The south end has been rendered, and the west front features two four-pane sash windows and a six-panel door with glazed sections, along with two 20th-century dormers. A large lean-to has been built on the left side of the west front, featuring a raised roof pitch and two 20th-century windows, one in the roof. An outbuilding, originally a bakehouse, is situated at a right angle to the main house at the south end. It is constructed of whitewashed rubblestone with a slate roof, extending over two stories, with a north-facing door to the left and one window on each floor to the right. Solid stone lintels are present on the ground floor.

Inside, the ground floor hallway has chamfered joists and a plain beam with planked partitions underneath. The main hall features a massive oak centre beam with pyramid stops at one end, and chamfered joists with ogee stops, except near the hallway. A large beam above the fireplace also has a pyramid stop on its front face and rests on a transverse oak beam leading to a lean-to chamber to the left. Both the centre beam and the beam above the fireplace have housings suggesting that joists were once positioned closer together. The fireplace, which is 4 meters wide, includes a bread oven to the left, and was originally fitted with a brick floor over beaten earth (now removed). A door with oak lintels leads to the outshut on the right. The outshut contains four beams, one with a scarf addition and a purlin hole, potentially reused from the first floor of the original building. The parlour to the right of the hallway has three beams and some chamfered joists. One beam has been turned through 90 degrees, revealing evidence of a partition and a 2.5-meter wide entrance. Below this beam is a stone and timber partition with a planked door.

The first floor is supported by five massive trusses. The first truss, marked 'V', is chamfered and stopped at the second purlin height, with three purlin holes and a collar mortise; one side has a later pegged collar. Truss two (marked 'IV') has a higher collar mortise than truss one and is chamfered and stopped, with a scarfed base and two visible purlin holes on one side. Truss three (marked ‘III’) is chamfered and stopped, while truss four is also chamfered and stopped with one visible purlin hole. Truss five is chamfered and stopped; one side has a scarfed base with two visible purlin holes and the other with three, and exhibits burn marks approximately 1 meter from the present floor level.

The bakehouse outbuilding originally consisted of a single room and a loft, with a massive fireplace beam and oak lintels over windows and doors. It contains A frames with iron staples, likely dating to the Victorian period.
