Description

The U-Plan Service Court Ranges is a three-sided structure built from rubble stone or coursed Cilgerran stone. It features a large two-storey, five-bay stable that backs onto the entrance court. The building has cut-stone voussoirs and five square six-pane sash windows on the upper floor. Below these, there is a layer of dove-holes and long ground floor 15-pane sash windows with cambered heads in bays one, four, and five. In bays two and three, there is a 20th-century inserted door, a large round arched opening with 20th-century infill and a fanlight, and a tall arched doorway that is now partly a window.

To the left, there is a two-storey lean-to against the end of the main house, and at the angle, a doorway leads into a small rear court. The other two sides of the building are mostly made of cut Cilgerran stone. The northeast-facing range has an outshut roof with paired central gables, while the southeast angle features a taller square block with a pyramid slate roof and a timber lantern topped with an ogee dome. The northwest-facing range has two eaves-breaking dormer gables and an end gable with a ridge bellcote.

Ground floor openings are connected by a continuous string that curves or steps over the openings. The paired gables have hoodmoulded pairs of casement windows. The large angle block has higher eaves and consists of a one-window range. The third range includes ground floor doors and nine-pane windows, with double windows above that break the eaves under bargeboarded dormer gables. The end bay features a similar door, a small octagonal window on the first floor between raised strings, and two sunk dove-shelves below the gable with quoins. There is also a large circular window, which replaces a clock, set in a square flat slate surround. The bargeboards are plain, and there is a ridge timber pyramid-roofed bellcote.
