Description

Wern Fach is a farmhouse constructed from whitewashed rubble stone, featuring a close-eaved slate roof and stone end stacks with dripstones. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window front range, with square 4-pane sashes on the upper floor and 12-pane sashes below. There is a door to the left of centre, which is a half-glazed door with an overlight. The left end wall includes a tiny loft light, while the rear right side has a low rear wing built into the slope, complete with a stone end wall chimney, indicating a roof that has been raised. The side of the house features a cambered-headed window and a half-glazed door, with a 9-pane dormer above the door, which has a triangular head that is lattice-glazed. The rear left side has an outshut dairy with a 20th-century door and a 6-pane window. The outshut end wall has a former door that has been converted into a window, with a small casement beneath it.

Inside, the hall contains later 18th-century painted pine partitions with moulded edges between wide planks, which are fielded on the inner sides. There are plank doors on either side. The dog-leg closed-string stair features stick balusters and a thin rail that extends up to the loft. The front kitchen has a massive lintel over the fireplace, with the chimney breast measuring about 8 feet deep. The lintel is chamfered but has been partially hacked off. Another large beam within the chimney is now covered. There is a plank door with wrought iron strap hinges leading into the rear dairy, which originally had a loft floor that has since been removed, exposing massive scarfed raking roof beams that appear to be reused. The floor is laid with slate flags, and there are slate shelves. The first floor has a large landing with some plank partitions, which are partly original and partly remade. A pine joist bears the date 1793, and oak beams are present throughout. The attic features five pegged oak collar trusses and double purlins supporting the roof. The rear room has a slate-flagged floor, a large chimney with an oak lintel, and one beam along with joists.
