Description
Cledwyn Main Building is a three-storey structure designed in a simple stripped-down Georgian modern style. It features five principal bays and is constructed from snecked rough grey masonry that is brought to courses, with ashlar dressings in Portland stone. This includes a continuous sill band and a string course that highlights the upper floor. The building has a moulded plinth and a simple parapet, behind which sits a hipped slate roof made from in-situ cast concrete.
The facades are straightforward and well-organized. The entrance façade is defined by a regular grid of fenestration, featuring simple flush mullioned windows—five lights on the ground and first floors, and narrower six-light windows on the second floor. The windows have steel details, with hopper opening lights on the lower floors and pivoting casements above. Between the upper windows, there are low relief emblems set in roundels. The central entrance is framed by a broad architrave, adorned with charming low reliefs depicting agricultural scenes. It is flanked by narrow windows with scrolled ironwork screens, and there is a shallow step leading up to the entrance, with ashlar stone planters, likely original, on either side.
The rear elevation mirrors the front, featuring a central entrance accessed by steps with flanking plinths. It includes 4-5-4-light mullioned windows beside the doorway, and a long triple-light stair window with an ironwork balcony above, showcasing a coronet detail. The outer flat panelled doors lead to glazed inner doors set back into the lobby. The upper floor and basement storey are balanced in height with the lower storey above and below the principal floors. Like the main elevation, emblems in low relief are present between the upper windows.
The return elevation to the north has continuous bands of mullioned windows arranged in a 2-4-2 light pattern. The southern elevation has a similar arrangement but is partially obscured by an adjoining link building, which is not listed as it does not meet the criteria for listing.
Inside, the building has a simple plan with central entrance halls at both the front and rear, leading to a circular marble-lined lobby. There is a staircase at the rear featuring streamlined art deco rails and terrazzo stairs, with art deco influences also visible in the subtle step-moulded cornices. Axial corridors on each floor provide access to the teaching rooms.
