Description

This is a range of outbuildings located to the northwest of Aberllech, constructed from whitewashed rubble stone with roofs made of slate or corrugated iron. The layout includes a barn at the lower end, followed by two lofted stables and a lofted three-door cowhouse, all arranged in sequence leading uphill to another barn at the top end. This upper barn features a lofted stable to the right of its entry and has a hipped roof.

The upper barn, which is positioned at right angles to the main range, has a stable door on the right side, followed by a long window, both adorned with painted stone voussoirs, and a small modern window above. These features are located to the right of double doors leading to the barn, which has a timber lintel supported by two horizontal beams under a pentice.

At the upper end of the main range, there are three doors with timber lintels, revealing the visible ends of loft beams. Above the center door is a boarded loft door, with one loop to the left and two to the right. The stable section contains a window, two doors, and another window, all featuring painted stone voussoirs, positioned under the visible ends of beams. There is a loft door above the right door, with one loop to the right and two to the left.

Across the upper floor, two rows of dove holes with stone shelves below each run along the length, one at sill level and one above, both interrupted for loft openings and loops. These dove holes continue across the barn to the left, with a third row beneath starting from the barn's beginning. The barn has a full-height opening with two loops on each side, breaking through the bottom row of dove holes.

Adjacent to the barn is a small single-storey pigsty with a corrugated iron roof, featuring two loops on its end wall. The rear of the pigsty has a barn door with an oak lintel, two loops to the right, and a very long lean-to extending to the left up to the gable end of the upper barn.

Inside the upper barn, there is a loft floor at the right end and a roof supported by five pegged tie-beam-and-collar trusses. A modern large fireplace is located on the back wall, and there is a thin timber-frame and brick wall leading to a former stable. In the main range, the stables and cowhouse are characterized by heavy beamed and joisted floors, while the lower barn features tie-beam-and-collar trusses secured with iron bolts at the collars.
