Description

This is an L-plan range of outbuildings attached to Barland, originating from the 17th century and remodelled and extended in 1857. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring an L-plan layout with two parallel ranges running northwest to southeast. It is constructed of roughcast with part slate and part tile roofs. The older range includes a hipped end, plain brick stacks, gabled eaves dormers, and an open timber bellcote topped with a domed leaded cap and weathervane. The windows consist of small-paned cross-pattern casements to the left of centre, a twelve-pane sash and first-floor half-sashes in the central section, and sliding sashes in the dormers. There is an enclosed rendered porch with a pointed arch entry.

The 1857 ranges have deep-set boxed eaves and wide verges supported by carved brackets. Notably, three distinctive triple-shafted stacks are present. The ground floor features twelve-pane sashes, openings with dropped cills, and two French doors with overlights. A weathered armorial plaque displaying the date of 1857 is located on the south gable.

Attached to the north end of the house are 19th-century service rooms and stables, which form a single-storey L-plan structure made of coursed rubble with slate roofs, boarded doors, and small-paned windows.

The interior, which is considered undistinguished, includes four-panel doors, ceiling cornices, high moulded skirting, and some exposed beams in the service area. The dog-leg stairs feature a scroll newel, a curtail step, an open string with template tread brackets, a ramped handrail, and heavy stick balusters.
