Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II listed building featuring a west tower, nave, south porch, lower and narrow chancel, and a northeast boiler house. It is constructed from red sandstone rubble with large, roughly dressed sandstone quoins on the nave and tower, while the 19th-century chancel is made of snecked rockfaced sandstone. The roof is covered with stone tiles arranged in diminishing courses, topped with glazed ridge tiles and cast iron apex crosses.

The west tower stands two storeys high and has a moulded embattled parapet along with a moulded string course at the parapet level that includes projecting stone water chutes. The ringing chamber features cusped louvred lights set back behind a chamfered pointed arched surround. Below the string course at the nave roof level are small square-headed chamfered lights for the tower chambers and stairs, and there is a moulded string course above a battered plinth.

The south porch has a wide chamfered elliptical arched doorway with a pointed arched niche above. It features swept eaves and square-headed side windows. Inside, the porch is stone flagged with moulded stone benches and has a chamfered pointed arched doorway leading into the church. The roof of the porch is supported by a two-bay arch-braced structure, with reeded braces and a truss that decoratively incorporates a quatrefoil. Carved faces are present where the truss meets the wall plate, and a large stone with a Latin inscription was placed against the west wall in 1920.

The south nave has battered walls and overhanging eaves. The windows are renewed pointed arched lights with cusped heads and armatures, with a single window to the west and double windows to the east. The chancel features a smaller southeast window, and its east wall has buttresses with deep offsets to accommodate the fall in the ground. The 19th-century decorated east window has face stops to the hood mould. The north nave windows are similar to those on the south.

The interior was substantially restored in the 19th century. The nave has a wagon roof with angled ribs rather than curved ones, and lath nails suggest that this fabric is medieval, while the boarding and crested wall plate are from the 19th century. The west tower arch is Tudor-arched. A circular font from the 12th century features rough cable and roll mouldings. There are large slabs against the walls, one on the north wall is not legible. The pointed chancel arch has giant vine leaf and fruit capitals but no shafts. An organ from Treberfydd House is present, and the tower houses four bells, two of which date back to 1678.
