Description
44 Broad Street is a three-storey, five-bay building constructed in Flemish bond brick. The façade features stock brick pilasters that divide the bays. It has a slate roof with bargeboards and boxed eaves, along with a freestone eaves band. The building is topped with moulded caps on three brick mid-roof stacks and has a lateral stack on the rear right. Under the eaves, there are two-light casement windows with a sill band, and the first-floor windows are adorned with blue brick round arches, freestone imposts, and keystones. The narrow central bays have a cambered arch, with a two-light casement window featuring fanlights and a sill band.
The ground floor on the left side includes a 19th-century shopfront with two-light bays flanking a recessed glazed door, which has a rectangular fan above it, along with a blind box and nameboard. A plain round arch leads to a central tunnel passage with a plank door. The right-hand bays have arches similar to those on the first floor. To the left, there is a robust fanlight over a panelled door with sidelights, and a similar fan is found above a three-light window.
At the rear, there is a three-storey outshot belonging to No 43, featuring small paned sash windows with gauged brick voussoirs. Additionally, there are good contemporary stables located at the rear of No 43, consisting of three lofted units with windows flanking the doors. These stables are built from English garden wall bond brick, with a whitewashed ground floor and a gabled roof that is partially slate and partially asbestos. The stables have round-arched windows and cambered doorheads, with later double doors cut into the end wall and subsequent blocking on the front right. There is also a loading door above the central stable door.
