Description
Swan House is a building originating from the 15th century. It is one-and-a-half storeys tall and incorporates parts of a high-quality, late-medieval cruck-built house, which includes a two-bay hall and an upper end bay. The exterior features 19th-century rubble stone refacing, a central front gablet dormer, a slate roof with a modern roof-light, a large brick stack at the end, and a smaller brick stack to the front left. The openings have cambered voussoir heads, a boarded front door, and modern timber casements. At the rear, there is a modern lean-to and conservatory.
Inside, two fairly complete cruck trusses of large scantling are exposed, mainly on the first floor. The former central truss is ornate, featuring moulded arch-bracing, and above the collar, it has cusped principals and braces that form an elongated quatrefoil and two trefoils. The partition truss between the former hall and upper end is also intact, along with its original infill panelling. This truss is a plain cruck truss with a vertical butt joint at the apex, a yoke, and a heavy cranked collar. A rail at head height is partially chamfered and stopped, indicating where a doorway once was. Some smoke-blackening is visible on both trusses, although cleaning and staining have obscured the original extent. Above the crucks, there are at least two phases of later roof structure.
On the ground floor, one of the principals of the former central truss is exposed, featuring quarter-round mouldings on both inner edges. A stone stack has been inserted against this truss, and the fireplace has chamfered ashlar jambs and a timber lintel with scroll stops, though it has been partially infilled. In the same room, there are two deep chamfered axial beams with slightly stepped draw-stops. The inner room contains a narrow chamfered beam with a scroll-stop, exposed joists, and a small stone fireplace with a modern lintel.
