Description
The War Memorial, built around 1918, features a soldier on a pedestal dressed in First World War battledress, standing in a 'reversed arms' stance. The pedestal is squared with a rusticated plinth, a moulded base, and a cap.
The memorial is inscribed in capitals on all four sides. On the south side, it reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE SACRIFICE OF THE MEN OF NEW RADNOR AND LLANFIHANGEL NANT MELAN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918," with a shield and the names of the fallen underneath.
The north side states: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE MEN WHO AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM. THEY MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. LET THOSE THAT COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES ARE NOT FORGOTTEN."
The west side features the inscription: "SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE TRUMPETS SOUNDED FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE."
On the east side, there is a sunray motif above the inscription: "AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM - 1939-1945," with the names of the fallen listed below.
