Description

Wayside is a two-storey house with a basement, dating from the 18th century. It has a T-shaped plan, originally incorporating a two-storey service wing which is now a separate dwelling. The walls are built of rendered rubble with raised bands creating large panels, while the basement section features exposed ashlar blocks. The roof is slate, with projecting, coved eaves and drop-crested eaves boards. There are three tall brick stacks with paired flues. The front door is located in a corner, approached by steps, and features a six-panel door with a fanlight and a simple arched surround. The windows are deep-set, with stone cills and twelve-pane sashes, except for the window on the front left, which has margin glazing and stained glass in the corners.

Inside, the house features six-panel doors, elaborate architraves around doors and principal windows, ceiling roses, and cornice friezes decorated with vine scrolls and acanthus leaves. The staircase has arch brackets with foliated decoration. The extensive basement has a floor of large slate slabs, arched alcoves, and slate shelving.
