Description

This is a farmhouse with a service range, dating from the late 17th century, with substantial alterations and additions in the 19th century. The main farmhouse is built of whitewashed rubble stone with 19th-century slate roofs and rebuilt brick end stacks. It has a three-window front with a symmetrical arrangement of late 19th or early 20th-century tripartite sash windows, featuring chamfered timber lintels and stone sills; the centre window is narrower. A gabled, enclosed porch of painted timber boarding, with a half-glazed door and side windows, is positioned centrally. A half-glazed door provides entry to the interior. The right gable has a small loft light above the service range roof.

The service range to the right mirrors the main house, with a central tripartite sash window on each floor, featuring stone sills and timber lintels, with 3-6-3 panes above and 4-8-4 panes below. A stone right-end stack has been raised in brick. The end wall has a door with a timber lintel to the left, and another timber lintel in the wall to the right. The rear of both the house and service range has outshots; the house outshut is to the left, and the service range outshut incorporates no visible building joint. A four-light window with ovolo moulding and a 19th-century door in the end wall are also present on the rear of the service range.

A late 17th-century studded plank door, with applied strips and strap hinges, stands within a 19th-century chamfered surround on the rear of the main house; to the right of this door is a small, ovolo-moulded three-light stair-light under the eaves, and a 3-light 19th-century casement to the ground floor right. The service range outshut has a four-light ovolo-moulded window to the rear.

Inside, ground floor rooms are characterised by heavy chamfered beams with stepped ogee stops and a painted 19th-century boarded dado. The eastern kitchen in the service range features stone flag floors, three exposed beams, a painted and grained fireplace surround, and an enclosed service staircase in the corner. The eastern room of the main house includes two axial beams, a 19th-century fireplace and dado, and a cross beam in the partition to the west end room. This western room has two axial beams, a massive oak sill to a recess, a possible blocked window on the back wall, and a deep window recess to the right of the fireplace.

The outshut contains a stone-flagged stair hall with a fine late 17th-century right-angled staircase featuring a closed string, thick turned balusters, square newels with heavy ogee finials and a massive moulded rail. A stone-flagged dairy is located in the service range outshut to the east of the stair hall, with another service room to the west.

On the first floor, the rear passage behind the front rooms retains rough chamfered beams. The space is decorated with 19th-century painted graining, cast-iron gates and doors. Notably, one door appears to be a reused outer door from the later 17th century, with a raised arch inset within a larger upper panel, the arch featuring a keystone and imposts of Jacobean style, linked to the outer frame by narrow panels. A room in the outshut has a heavy principal rafter and oak post down to a ground floor beam. The loft contains oak roof trusses with queen posts.
