Description

Cartrefle and Nos. 1-4 Rose Cottages form an irregular terrace of cottages, likely dating to the 18th century. The terrace comprises one larger cottage on the left, and four smaller cottages arranged symmetrically around a rear access passage. The four smaller cottages consist of one single-fronted property, two double-fronted properties, and a single-fronted property with an additional window above the front door. The terrace is constructed of local light red brick at the front, with uncoursed stonework at the rear and right gable; the exposed left gable is clad in slate above the brickwork. The roof is slate, with a tile ridge and five mid-chimneys.

Cartrefle, with its three-window facade, door casing, and shallow brick pilasters, appears to have been a cottage of higher status than the others in the terrace. The window openings are slightly asymmetrical, featuring rubbed brick flat arches and stone sills, except for the window on the bottom right, which has been altered to a late 19th-century design with a stone lintel. Most windows are 16-pane hornless sash windows; the window on the bottom right is a horned sash window with small panes in the top sashes only.
