Description
Mansion House, also known as Country Style (formerly Bennett's Shop), is a 2-window building with a stucco front and a band over the first floor. It features a pitched slate roof with moulded eaves and gable bargeboards. The façade includes tripartite sash windows set in flush wooden frames. There is an entry to a passage on the left, which has an ornamental fanlight above a 6-panel door. To the right, there is a low 2-storey, 1-window extension with a projecting double shop front beneath an overall fascia that extends from the main front. The lane wall at the right end displays timber-framing with a horizontal moulded beam.
The passage has a 2-storey timber-framed and whitewashed elevation, with the first floor jettied and partly cut away to expose the framing. At the rear, there is a lower roughcast range featuring 16-pane sash and case windows on the first floor.
The interior of the rear wing, which is separated from the front building by a cross passage, likely contained an open hall with probable aisled-truss construction. Notable surviving details include a variety of roll-moulded beams and a finely carved bracket with traceried spandrel.
