Description

Trederwen House is a Regency or early Victorian house, dating from the 18th or 19th century. It presents as a two-storey, three-window front, but rises to three storeys at the rear. The house is constructed of local light red brickwork and has the unusual feature of a hipped tile roof, with brick chimneys situated close to the apexes of the hips. A single-storey, span-roofed rear extension, with a brick end chimney, likely originally served as a kitchen and is now primarily used as a garage.

The front elevation is well-proportioned, with the upper windows slightly reduced in height but aligning with the cornice. Boxed eaves are present above, and the elevation demonstrates an almost imperceptible deviation from perfect symmetry. Window openings are topped with wedge stone lintels and have stone sills. The windows are hornless sash windows with 12 panes plus margin glazing. The front door has a rectangular overlight and a panelled surround, featuring plain square pilasters supporting a plain architrave, cornice and blocking course.

The side elevations are also in brickwork. The left side has a door leading to a conservatory at the rear and a modern window above. The right side features a window to each storey at the rear, set within openings with wedge stone lintels and stone sills. These windows have a characteristic local small-pane design, with three lights and diagonally crossed glazing bars in the heads of the lights. The rear of the house has been rendered.

Inside, the house has a symmetrical plan to the front, with four-panelled doors to the main rooms. The staircase is positioned unusually close to the front of the house and is a fine example, with ornate brackets and a coiled handrail fitted with ivory buttons. There is pine panelling below the stairs. Doorcases and window shutter panelling are characterised by pointed apexes to the panels.
