Description
The Golden Lion is a late 18th-century building constructed from rendered brick with incised lines. It features a plinth, string courses at the cill heights, and quoined surrounds at the corners, all of which are over-painted. The building has two storeys with an attic and cellar, a double pile design, two flush end stacks, and a slate roof with boxed eaves.
There are three windows on the ground and first floors designed in a Venetian style, each with raised keystones. The attic storey has an arched window, and all windows have modern glazing bars at the heads and casements below. The central door is raised and recessed, surrounded by a plain frame and topped with a flat canopy supported by carved brackets. An elaborate mid-19th century wrought iron bracket holds a lamp above the front door. There is a flat arch leading to the cellar opening on the lower right-hand side. The gable ends have modern glazing, and there is a modern brick lean-to at the rear.
Originally, the building had a plan of four equal rooms with a central staircase. It was damaged by fire in 1963, resulting in an open-plan layout on both sides of the modern stairs. Further alterations occurred in 1987, which included the addition of false timber-work to the ground floor walls.
