Description
The Old House at Hondon is a 17th-century building that features a long range aligned roughly northwest to southeast. It consists of a house with a cartshed attached to the northwest end, and to the southeast, a cowhouse followed by a barn. The structure is primarily made of stone, with some timber-framing visible on the front of the barn. The roofs are covered with stone tiles, slate, and corrugated iron.
The house has a large two-storey gabled porch that includes a three-light window at the upper level, with a doorway offset to the right and an additional doorway in the left return. A large stone chimney is located at the left end of the house, and to the right of the porch is a two-light window. The right gable is half-hipped and features a small window. Set back to the right is the parlour block with a low stone chimney, followed by the rear of the cartshed which opens to the back. To the left of the house is the cowhouse, which has a catslide dormer and a door towards the left. Further to the left is the barn, which also has some timber-framing on the front and large opposed threshing doorways.
Inside, the porch features a screen to the left with two tiers of pierced flat balusters, leading to a boarded door to the house. The older part of the house is believed to retain three cruck trusses and part of a screen with jowled posts, along with a large fireplace that has a decorated beam. The barn consists of three bays, with roof trusses that include raking struts and a stone threshing floor.
