Description

The Alliance & Leicester is a three-storey building with a two-window gabled front, constructed from red brick. It features freestone window dressings, stock brick quoins, and cill bands. The slate roof has wide boarded eaves and a stock brick chimney stack that includes red brick banding. The second-floor windows extend into the gables, which have ogee-shaped bargeboards adorned with punched roundels and retain their finials. The paired horned sash windows are topped with hoodmoulds and have chamfered mullions, with punched roundels in the spandrels. The second-floor windows have acutely pointed and stilted heads, while the first-floor windows feature Caernarvon arch heads and a toothed impost band.

The building retains fine contemporary shopfronts, which include end and centrally dividing composite pilasters; the left end pilaster is panelled. The brackets are ornately decorated, and there is an overall cornice. The openings have saw tooth lintels and flanking colonnettes, with panelled spandrels and reveals. The large shop windows have glazing bars only at the top and feature half-glazed double doors at the ends.

On the right-hand side, there is a red brick section with English Garden wall bond, featuring two windows with nearly flush frames for the horned sash windows, one of which has small panes. The doorcase has a bracket cornice with a modern door. The rear of the building is also red brick, with a chimney breast, modern windows, and a single-storey lean-to.
