Description
Llanddewi Hall is a 2½-storey house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions in the 19th century. It comprises a main hall range with a cross wing, forming a T-shaped plan. The house is constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof and stone stacks. Windows are mainly from the late 19th century, with wooden frames.
The south entrance is on the left side of the main range, within a lean-to porch added in the late 20th century. The entrance features a pointed doorway with continuous chamfer and a boarded door. To the right of the entrance is a 3-light window with a brick segmental head. The upper storey has a 2-light window to the left and a 3-light window to the right, with a blocked window in the centre. The right gable end has a large, stepped, projecting stone stack offset to the right side.
The cross wing has a 4-light window in the lower storey and a 3-light window above, both under brick segmental heads, and a 2-light attic window. The left side wall of the cross wing is dominated by an external stack with two square shafts, offset to the right side. Adjacent to this is a blocked doorway with a wooden lintel, formerly leading to an added pantry and dairy, the outline of which is visible on the ground. A 20th-century 4-light window with a concrete lintel and a 2-light window above it with a wooden lintel are also present on the left side.
The rear of the cross wing has a 4-light window under a concrete lintel, inserted on the left side in the position of a blocked doorway. Above it is a 3-light window on the left side and a 6-pane attic window to the left of centre. To the left of the cross wing is a stair turret under an outshut roof, with an inserted half-glazed door and a small-pane window lighting the stair. The rear of the main range has a 4-pane lower-storey window, a 6-pane window above, and a blocked door at the left end.
Inside, the hall retains a heavy framed ceiling with plain chamfers and two carved bosses. The fireplace features a large timber lintel and a small cupboard beside it. A post-and-panel partition with two ornate triangular doorheads is on the left side of the entrance. The parlour doorway on the left side has foliage spandrels incorporating roundels, and a small carved head over the apex of the door. The service room doorway has simpler carved spandrels and a rabbit’s head above the apex of the ribbed door. The parlour also features a heavy framed ceiling similar to the hall, alongside an oak-panelled partition.
A dog-leg stair is a 17th-century alteration, and has turned balusters and square newels. Above the stair is a triangular door head. The upper storey of the cross wing contains original box-framed partitions. These are partly obscured by reset Elizabethan panelling on the landing, which is profusely ornamented with arched panels, strapwork and fielded-panel doors.
