Description
7 Church Street is a well-preserved building from the 18th century, originally dated 1742, as indicated by a tablet inscribed with the names Briscoe J.M. (John and Mary). The building has been raised in height since its construction.
The exterior features brick construction topped with a slate roof and consists of three storeys. The first floor has a seven-window range, while the upper floor has four windows. The ground floor shop fronts are restorations or replicas from the mid to late 19th century, each having a doorway on the left and a vertically divided window with four panes and a single central transom alongside. Slender pilasters support a continuous fascia. There is a single earlier window situated between the shop fronts and an inserted double doorway to the right. Traces of the original string course can be seen above the central window. The first floor features 12-pane flush-framed sash windows with cambered brick heads, while the upper floor has 9-pane sashes with timber lintels beneath a moulded eaves cornice.
Inside, the upper storey retains re-used roof timbers from the original two-storeyed building of 1742. This building is part of a group of commercial and domestic properties located on Church Street.
