Description
9 Church Street was built around 1890 on the site of a malt-house to serve as the depot for the Welshpool foundry of J.M. Morris, designed by Mr. Hurst, the Borough Surveyor. The building features a brick exterior with stone dressings and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and has a five-bay range, highlighted by a strong cornice band above the second storey and pilasters between the bays.
The central bay has a pediment and houses the entrance, which consists of paired doors set in a round-headed archway with a terracotta keyblock. The right-hand bays have floor-length windows with similar detailing, while the left-hand bays have been altered to include a shop front. Each bay on the first floor has paired 2-pane sash windows with stone sills, lintels, and a frieze band. The windows above the principal cornice band have segmentally arched heads with stone springers and keystones. A lettered frieze below the eaves reads 'J & M Morris Agricultural Implement Depot'. The three-bay return elevation features similar details, including a central doorway.
This building is an excellent example of the warehousing type that played a significant role in the commercial development of Welshpool during the 19th century, showcasing a clear architectural expression of its character and status.
