Description
The Dower House at Trelydan Hall is a building likely constructed around 1700, with a new southwest front added around 1770, as indicated by a date on a bell. Initially thought to be a superior outbuilding, it later became a dwelling but was disused at the time of inspection in May 1995.
The exterior is made of brick with a slate roof and features crow-stepped gables. It is two storeys high with a five-window range. The southwest front has a slightly advanced central gable that contains a doorway with a fanlight set in a segmental archway, along with a 16-pane sash window above and a clock at the apex of the gable. The flanking bays have two 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and 16-pane sashes above, all with cambered brick heads. A central wooden bell-cupola is also present. The rear elevation maintains the earlier pattern of openings, with the windows renewed in their original openings featuring single ring cambered heads.
This building is a fine example of early 18th-century architecture, elegantly refronted in the later 18th century. It is part of a closely-knit group, both architecturally and functionally, with the hall.
