Description

The Caban Coch Dam, partly situated within the Llanwrthwl community, is a masonry dam constructed with large, heavily rock-faced blocks. The dam incorporates spillways at each end, which broaden as they descend, with the surrounding walls turning to run parallel with the stream. Two rows of protruding blocks are visible, a remnant of the scaffolding used during its construction. At the base of the dam are two substantial circular outlets, featuring a keyblock surrounded by piers, and topped with a pyramidal pediment constructed of tumbled blocks. Each end of the dam has a platform surmounted by gigantic capstones shaped to resemble natural rock. Steps lead down to the top of the dam, with arches facing the reservoir, three windows overlooking the dam itself, and a square outlet leading to the spillway.
