Description
1 Mount Street is a building likely constructed in the early 17th century, which has undergone modifications, particularly during its conversion into a shop. Originally, it was a small two-unit house featuring a central porch with two storeys, a simplified version of a common rural house type in the area. The ground floor of the porch was removed, with the upper storey supported by cast-iron columns, and a lean-to extension was added to one side to expand the shop frontage, likely in the mid to late 19th century.
The exterior is a timber-framed structure that is mostly covered by rendering, though some timber framing is visible on the rear elevation. It has a steep slate roof and consists of two storeys with a two-unit plan, highlighted by the central storeyed porch wing. The ground floor features a late 19th-century shop front that extends into the lean-to extension on the left side of the porch. The shop front is symmetrically designed, with a central door flanked by nearly square, four-paned shop windows, while a blocked doorway to the right leads to a passage. The upper storey includes a blocked window in the porch and a three-light wood mullioned and transomed window to the right, along with a two-light casement window to the left. A long rear wing extends from the building.
This structure is recognized as an important surviving example of the timber-framed building tradition in the town, retaining much of its original form despite later alterations.
