Description

This is a simple classical style Congregational Chapel, likely dating to the 18th century, with later additions. The front elevation is pebble-dashed and painted cream, topped with a slate roof. Four windows span the front, centred around a gabled porch with a fish-scale slate roof. The porch features a round-headed doorway and small side windows, and inside are double-panelled doors beneath an overlight. Above the porch are two round-headed windows, lighting the gallery, each with two-light Italianate tracery. These are flanked by taller, thin, round-headed windows. The pedimented gable has a plain cornice with dentils, forming an impost band to the windows. A dated inscription tablet sits within the pediment, above two round-headed openings near the apex.

The left side wall has recently been rendered and painted cream, and includes two pairs of narrow horned sashes set to the ends, with round-headed sashes above, also lighting the gallery. The right side wall is constructed of red brick and is similarly arranged. The rear elevation is roughcast and features a single round-headed sash window in the upper left corner.

Attached to the rear, continuous with the left side wall, is a lower and narrower stable and school room, constructed of brick with a slate roof. It has an end stack. The left side of the stable and schoolroom is pebble-dashed and painted cream, with a stable door under a segmental head, above which sits a horned sash window below the eaves. The opposite side wall includes external steps leading to a boarded door below the eaves; these steps have brick risers and a balustrade, with stone treads. Further to the right is a sash window below the eaves, above a small vented opening to the stable.

Inside, the vestibule has an etched glass panel opposite the doorway and plain panel doors. A three-sided raked gallery is supported by fluted cast iron columns with foliage capitals. The gallery front is boarded but incorporates an open cast iron trail of foliage. The ceiling features large panels framed by moulded square ribs, with two round vents and a central ceiling rose. A reredos is distinguished by its raised segmental arch on fluted pilasters with foliage capitals. The pulpit has an open front with two round arches on turned posts, flanked by steps with turned balusters and newels. The pews and set fawr have plain mouldings. A simple stone tablet on the left side wall commemorates Benjamin Davies (d. 1917) and is the work of E.L. Davies of Llanwrtyd.
