Description
The outbuildings to the rear of No. 20 Union Street, which includes 12 Bryn Street, are early 19th century Georgian structures located in Penygloddfa, Newtown. This corner unit features zig-zag internal partitions that create a three-window symmetrical facade facing Union Street, with one tier of windows from No. 12 Bryn Street also looking onto Union Street.
The building is three storeys high with a cellar and has a three-window front on Union Street and a two-window front on Bryn Street, with dummy windows on the left side. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and has a gently pitched slate roof that is hipped at the corner, with lead ridges and a saw tooth eaves cornice. The rear of the building reveals exposed purlins and rafters, along with brick stacks. The second-floor windows on Union Street are shallow upper sashes with 12 panes, while the centre window features 9 panes and a dummy window is located to the left on Bryn Street. Flanking the doorway on Union Street are 16-pane sashes. The original panelled shutters on pintles are present on the Bryn Street side, and there is a blocked window to the left. The facade includes gauged brick voussoirs, plain reveals, and a stone sill. There are steps leading to the doorcase on Union Street, which has a bracketed, moulded dripboard and panelled reveals, along with a rectangular fanlight and a six-panel door. A similar doorcase is found on Bryn Street, but it lacks a fanlight.
At the rear, there is a backyard with later 19th century outbuildings made of English garden wall bond brick, featuring gabled slate roofs and ornamental bargeboards. The openings have cambered brick arches. One outbuilding has a gable end facing the street, with a rectangular fanlight above a plank door and a round-arched window to the right with a louvred vent above it. There are also two plank doors leading to a tile-capped yard wall.
