Description
The cottages at Melin-y-Ddol, located adjacent to Ty Gwyn to the south, date from the late 17th century to the 18th century. This half-timbered row consists of four cottages, with the fourth cottage projecting as a lower cross-wing at the southern end. According to the Tithe Plan of 1842, these were described as four houses owned by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn. The cottages are one storey with an attic, featuring a combination of wattle and daub and brick infilling. They have a slate gabled roof, with a red brick chimney stack at the north end and another stack positioned between the second and third cottages from the north.
The front elevation displays four two-light wooden casement windows with small panes, along with three wooden boarded doors on the ground floor. There are also three hipped dormers, each with two-light windows. The east gable end of the southern projecting cross-wing has a modern window in the attic and a two-light window on the ground floor, while the south return of this cross-wing features a wooden boarded door. The south gable end of the main wing is clad in wooden boarding and corrugated iron. The rear elevation includes a gabled dormer. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain features that are contemporary with or older than the exterior.
