Description
The Glyn Valley Hotel is a large, 1835-built, three-storey, three-window block facing east. It is constructed of whitewashed rubble stone with a shallow, hipped slate roof featuring modillion eaves and two yellow brick ridge stacks. The windows are wide, hornless sash windows with wedge lintels and stone sills, with 4-over-8-pane sashes in the attic storey. The ground floor features two gabled stone porches, one to the left of centre and the other to the right end, linked by a canopy of clear sheeting (previously slate-roofed according to early 20th-century photographs), supported by a wooden post with chamfered angles, and a floor of red and blue quarry tiles. The original entrance is located to the left of centre, featuring quoin strips to the angles and double, half-glazed, panelled doors with side lights. A gable panel displays the words "Hotel Entrance". A three-light window is found to the left return of the porch, and a half-glazed, panelled door to the right return. Inside the porch, a part-glazed, panelled door and overlight with margin glazing lead into the bar. A replacement, four-pane, horned sash window lights the bar to the right of the original window. A later porch to the right has no external doorway, with a part-glazed door and side lights leading into the reception area. A small, decorated slate tablet reading "TJ / 1835" is positioned above the original entrance on the middle storey.
The south end of the hotel has a 20th-century casement window on the left of the lower storey, and a 4-over-8-pane sash window on the right of the attic storey. The north end incorporates a six-pane attic window to the right of centre, beneath a large, late 20th-century, single-storey block with a hipped roof. The rear elevation, un-whitewashed, is a four-window elevation with 4-over-8-pane sashes in the attic storey set within segmental brick heads. The middle storey has two similar window openings with 20th-century glazing. Two large, two-storey wings extend at right angles – the one to the left dating to the 19th century, and the one to the right to the 20th century. The older wing has a hipped slate roof and some original windows, including a nine-pane upper storey window to the end and a sash to the north side.
The original entrance on the left leads to the bar area, which contains two moulded beams and plain joists. A fireplace with a carved wooden surround is located to the right, and a later, 20th-century, wooden-panelled bar is straight ahead. To the left of the bar is a further room with panelling. A staircase with flat, wooden balusters and a moulded handrail is situated at right angles behind. A large, 20th-century games room is located in the rear wing. The right-hand entrance leads into the hotel reception area, with a reportedly late 20th-century staircase.
