Description
Two picturesque cottages, numbers 1 and 2 Iscoyd Cottages, were built in the 19th century and are situated at right angles to form a general T-shaped plan, although gabled projections on each side create an irregular appearance. The cottages are primarily of brick with freestone dressings, with timber framing in the upper storey featuring cross bracing. They have steep tile roofs with cusped barge boards and finials to the main elevations, and rebuilt brick stacks which replaced earlier stacks with barley-twist shafts.
Number 1 cottage has an asymmetrical two-window front. A central porch sits on a dwarf wall and has twisted posts leading to an open gable with a castellated tie beam. The front door is heavily studded within a Tudor-headed surround. To the left is a two-light mullioned window, and to the right, a similar three-light window below a two-light wood-framed window with a metal casement, both set under a gable. The left gable end is particularly ornate, with a canted two-light bay window beneath a deep lean-to canopy supported by brackets. Above the bay window, a shallow three-light oriel window is similarly sheltered, and above that is a complex pattern of timber framing including cusped X-shaped and circular panels. A two-window rear wing features upper-storey windows with leaded glazing, and a half-glazed door facing the yard behind number 2.
Number 2 cottage has its gable end facing the road, with the entrance on the right-hand side wall. A red sandstone stack, with lighter freestone quoins and a brick shaft, is located on the left-hand side wall, facing the entrance to number 1. This stack bears a stone shield with "PLG" in raised letters above a scroll bearing "1854" in relief. The gable end has a three-light mullioned window in the lower storey, incorporating casements. It also features a jettied upper storey and a canted two-light oriel window set within an ornate gable. The right-hand side wall has a lower brick projection with an asymmetrical gable incorporating an open porch on the left side. This porch has shaped timber posts on plain brick bases, and a boarded front door with bands of studs. To the right of the door are a replacement window and a half-glazed panel door, above which is a two-light casement window. The rear gable end retains a two-light window with diamond-leaded glazing in the upper storey, and a replacement two-light casement window below.
