Description

Redbrook House is a Georgian house, dating from the 18th century, situated symmetrically with three bays and two and a half storeys. The house is constructed of brick, which has been painted white, and has a slate roof with coped gables and sawtooth eaves. Replacement brick chimney stacks are located at the rear, along with skylights. A central porch is rendered and features a sawtooth frieze below the blocking course, and Tuscan columns set in recessed surrounds. The panelled front door consists of flush lower panels and four fielded upper panels, with a round-headed radial-glazed fanlight above. Reveals beside the door are filled with panels matching the door itself. Original windows are 12-pane horned sashes set within segmental-headed openings. The wall in the right-hand bay has been rebuilt between the lower and upper-storey windows.

The right-hand gable end, where a previous adjoining house once stood, is rendered and painted cream, and contains a two-light window in the upper section. In the left-hand gable end are a 12-pane horned sash window above the right, a small-pane casement window above the left, and a replaced casement window to the left of the attic stack. The rear elevation has sawtooth eaves over the central and right sides only. It features two superimposed stair windows with 12-pane sashes, a replacement half-glazed door beneath a large overlight to the right, and a replacement window further to the right.

A lower, two-storey rear wing has a timber frame with rendered panels and a roof of large slates. Some original framing remains, but much has been renewed. On the north side, it features two-light casement windows on each storey. The upper right window has glazing bars arranged in a hexagonal and diamond pattern. The gable end reveals the lines of two earlier roof levels. A single-storey projection is present with a half-glazed split door. To the right of this projection is an inserted two-light window. The opposite (south) side of the wing is rendered. An external chimney stack has been added to the left of centre, with narrow windows on each storey to its left. To the right of the stack are two two-light windows on the lower storey and a three-light window on the upper storey. At the right end, a lower projection in line has a half-glazed door, followed by a single-storey projection at a right angle, constructed of brick with a corrugated-iron roof. This addition has a central boarded door, three-light windows to the left, and has been rebuilt to the right with a door and a small-pane window.

Inside, an elliptical archway leads from the entrance hall to the rear stair hall, which preserves a fine, full-height open-well staircase with turned balusters, moulded tread ends, and a wreathed handrail. The attic staircase has simpler, round newels. The principal room is located on the left side of the house. Its doorway has fielded-panel reveals. The room contains a neo-classical wooden fireplace surround with a shouldered architrave, and a plaster bracketed cornice. Main rooms feature panelled window reveals, and most retain panelled shutters. Doors throughout the main rooms are fielded-panel; those in the attic service rooms are plainer two-panel doors. A two-panel door leads below the staircase to the cellar, which has stone steps, a brick floor, and two smaller chambers beneath segmental tunnel vaults. The main cellar has a cross beam and a plastered ceiling.
