Description

5 Fairy Road is a 19th-century building constructed of red brick, featuring terracotta and stone dressings, roughcast rendered panels on the first floor, and a green slate roof. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and exhibits a balanced asymmetry. The main facade faces south, with a central entrance flanked by two crow-stepped gables. The entrance is set back in a porch, which has terracotta ribs on either side of a segmentally arched doorway that includes the raised lettering 'Fairy Mount 1881'. The entrance features a panelled door with an overlight above it. Above the entrance, there is a two-light uPVC replacement casement window beneath overhanging eaves.

To the right of the entrance bay is a semi-octagonal turret topped with a bell-cast roof, which has had its windows replaced with uPVC. On the left-hand gable, paired windows (uPVC replacements of original sashes with small upper panes) are present on each floor. This gable is highlighted by Corinthian pilasters made of rubbed brick and terracotta, with stone bands forming the lintels. The lower windows have brick relieving arches above a moulded string, and a central rib serves as a finial for the crow-stepped gable. There is a stack on the left-hand gable wall, adorned with terracotta work, and another similarly detailed stack is located in the inner angle of the turret to the right of the entrance. The set-back right-hand gable features a single window on each floor, also uPVC replacements of original sashes with small upper panes, matching the detail of the left-hand gable.

At the rear, there is a service wing with an asymmetrical roofline and renewed casement windows that have segmentally arched heads. A stair-window at the back of the main range includes leaded lights and some stained glass work.

Internally, the original layout remains largely intact, with a central entrance and stair hall, and the principal rooms arranged on either side. The service rooms at the rear have undergone minor modifications. Some original decorative details are preserved, including contemporary joinery, notably the staircase, which features Japanese-style lattice balusters.
