Description

Chirk Town Council Offices is a building constructed from snecked squared sandstone, topped with a red tiled roof, and designed in the Neo-Jacobean style. The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central two-storey porch made of ashlar stone. This porch has an open ground floor with a round arch, where the alternate voussoirs are pronounced, and it is flanked by raised Tuscan columns. Above the porch, there is a narrow entablature and a cushioned shield within a strapwork cartouche that displays the date. A four-light bay window with tapered pilasters on either side sits above the porch, which is topped with an openwork balustrade and a gable that is set back from the facade line.

On either side of the porch, there are simple wide recessed bays with similar fenestration, leading to end wing bays that are set forward and gabled. These wings feature two-storey canted stone bay windows with mullions and transoms. The coped gables are adorned with square finials. The hipped roof over the porch and side bays includes large stone stacks positioned between the ends and the wings. The open lobby is finished with glazed bricks, and it has double panelled doors topped by a segmental leaded fanlight.

At the rear, the hall contains mullioned and transomed windows situated between raking buttresses. In the 1970s, WCs and a kitchen were added in the re-entrant angles. The inner lobby is raised by two steps and features a multi-coloured mosaic floor, while the cross corridor is paved with brickwork. The rooms include panelled overmantels above blocked fireplaces and corniced ceilings. Additionally, there is a long range at the rear set at right angles, which houses a public meeting hall with an open timber roof of five bays and a brick arched raised stage at the eastern end. A gallery at the western end has been blocked in, and the dado is finished with green and brown glazed tiles.
