Description

Bwlchbychan is a two-storey building constructed from sandstone rubble, likely originally roughcast or stuccoed, featuring tooled sandstone dressings and slate hipped roofs. It has corniced stone ridge stacks and a six-window south front, with three-window east and west sides, and a slightly lower six-window service range at the back. The building has deep bracketed eaves, a plinth, tooled flush quoins, and voussoirs. The south front displays six 12-pane first floor hornless sash windows and two semi-circular three-window stone bays on the ground floor, which include French windows and top-lights. The rough stepped cornices above the flat roofs were probably intended for moulded stucco.

On the east side, there are three similar first floor windows above ground floor French windows on the left and right. There is a slightly off-centre large rounded porch, resembling the front bays, which has a flat roof but may have originally featured a larger cornice and roof or parapet, as indicated by a mark on the wall above. The porch includes curved double half-glazed doors with a large two-light curved top-light, and a single light with top-light on each side.

The service wing is a large double-pile structure with hipped valley roofs and corniced stacks on each ridge. It has a five-window range, with regular 9-pane sashes above and 12-pane sashes below. The end wall features a six-panel door with an overlight and a 9-pane sash above.

Inside, there is a spine corridor with stone and slate paving and a ribbed plaster ceiling. To the right of the centre is an apsidal-ended staircase with stick balusters and a moulded rail. The hall is top-lit by an octagonal lantern, which was altered in the 20th century. Two main front rooms open off the corridor, both with plaster cornices and marble fireplaces. The southeast room has a thick vine motif on the ceiling border and an acanthus over egg-and-dart design on the cornice, along with a sideboard recess to the right. There are six-panel doors throughout. The upper main bedrooms are located at the corners of the house, lit from two sides, with dressing rooms in the centre. The service wing also features a slate-paved spine corridor.
