Description

Saint Mary’s House is a two-storeyed house with an attic, dating from the 18th century. A three-window front range is accompanied by a left-hand gable return that forms a full-height canted bay incorporating a chimney, and a two-window range wing which is part of the original building. In 1868, the property was extended by Teulon, who added a two-storeyed, two-window range wing, along with a stable block to the rear. The front elevation features a six-panelled door with an overlight beneath a canopy supported by brackets, and twelve-pane sash windows with flat-arched brick heads on each floor. Similar windows are found in the canted gabled return. A deep dentilled eaves band is reflected in the ornamental caps of the original axial chimneys, and this detail is repeated in Teulon's later work, which included a corbelled chimney to the side of the canted return. The rear wing added by Teulon has a wide gable with three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows on each floor, and a door within a lean-to porch in its angle to the left. More windows are present on each floor to the left of the doorway, surmounted by a tile-hung dormer gable. This wing is connected to the stable block by a short wall. The stable block is square, with a hipped roof, doors on either side of a central window, and a gabled dormer to the loft.

Inside, a staircase features turned balusters, a swept moulded rail, and a closed string. Surviving joinery detail includes panelled shutters and fielded panelled doors.

An estate office building adjoins Saint Mary’s House, and is of lower height. It is constructed of brick with slate roofs, and has two stories with gabled dormers to the attic and a three-window range. A lower, arched window with Y-tracery lights a room currently accessed from Saint Mary's House. A square bay window is also positioned towards the left, alongside casement windows, largely obscured by ivy at the time of inspection in September 1993. The entrance is in the angle of the rear wing, which features a three-light casement window with transoms on each floor (a two-light casement window over the door was likely inserted later). An axial stack is present on the front range, with a gabled end stack to the rear wing.
