Description
Pickhill Meadows Suspension Bridge is a Grade II listed steel suspension bridge featuring hollow lattice truss construction and steel-wire cable suspension. It has a span of 41 metres and a single lane deck that is 3 metres wide. At either end of the bridge, paired lattice towers support the cables, with the lattice frames hung below. Transverse members connect to support the timber deck. The towers are tapered and topped with ball and spike finials, while their lower portions, up to handrail level, are now encased in supporting concrete. Each side of the bridge has a pair of steel wire ropes, totaling four ropes, which run through tubular suspenders that have a flat link section secured with two heavy rivets. The bulky anchor point clasps at each corner are stamped ‘ROWELL LONDON’. The portal trusses feature a shallow arch below and are flat above, with zigzag girders between.
