Description

The Wymmstay Arms Hotel is a building that dates back to around 1780, featuring a three-story, six-window block at the corner with Charles Street, along with a recessed block to the right that was part of a former courtyard entry. The entrance is located to the right of the center and is framed by a stressed architrave. The windows above the entrance are also stressed, with a pediment over the first-floor window. Other windows have painted stone heads with voussoirs and brick aprons, featuring 12-pane sashes, while the attic storey has 9-pane sashes. A cast iron balcony on the first floor showcases Grecian motifs. Below the moulded eaves cornice, there is a plain painted band. The building has painted angle quoins at the corner with Charles Street and a curved angle to the right, which connects to a single window range above the former courtyard entry. This section includes a segmentally arched entrance on the ground floor, with windows above emphasized by an entablature hood over the first-floor window and a segmentally arched head on the upper window. There is also a five-window return along Charles Street, which includes a blocked carriage entry on the left.

To the right of the original block is a three-window range that was added in the early 19th century, stepping down the slope of Yorke Street. This extension balances the original building and features a curved corner adjoining the former courtyard entrance. Although it shares similar detailing, such as the eaves cornice, its fenestration differs, with round-arched lower openings and a tripartite sash window across the curved corner. The upper windows have moulded architraves and continuous sill bands.
