Description
The Limekilns are a pair of structures built into the hillside, facing west. They are full-height and made from large blocks of mainly coursed stone. Each limekiln features two draw-hole tunnels with wide round brick arches. The left arch has a double ring that appears to be renewed, while the right arch has a single ring of handmade brick and a hoodmould. The side walls of both draw-hole tunnels are made of stone and support sloping brick soffits. The right draw-hole tunnel is well preserved, with a segmental brick arch at the rear over a pair of small cast iron gates, although the left gate is missing and is situated under a cast iron lintel. There is a small brick segmental-arched opening below. The left draw-hole tunnel shows signs of collapse at the rear and is partly infilled with soil. Above the arches, the masonry steps in slightly, with a socket above. The north end wall has small recesses and sockets and faces into the quarry. There is a large raked diagonal buttress at the northwest angle. The south wall tapers slightly and has a raked angle buttress on the left. On the top surface, the right shaft is lined with brick, while the left shaft is infilled.
