Description
Pen-y-Fron Baptist Chapel, built in 1825, is located on the east side of Pen-y-fron Road in the northern part of the settlement. It is the oldest surviving Baptist chapel still in use in the former county of Flintshire and is notable for being the only intact example with a square plan and a central entrance in the side wall. The chapel underwent repairs and restoration in the late 20th century, and its furnishings were sourced from elsewhere.
The exterior features rubble construction with roughly squared quoins and stepped architraves around the openings. It has a renewed slate roof and a symmetrical façade with a central entrance that includes a 19th-century door flanked by sash windows with margin lights and textured glass; the window to the right has a renewed stone lintel. Above the entrance is a stone inscribed in Welsh from Isaiah 55:3, along with the date 1825. An outbuilding with a 20th-century door is attached to the right side. The left-hand return elevation is rendered, while the rear elevation has two sash windows similar to those at the front.
The burial ground walls, made of rubble, extend from both the front and rear of the building, forming a rectangular enclosure that contains gravestones. These walls were restored in the late 20th century.
The interior was not accessible during the inspection in March 1995. The chapel is listed as a locally rare example of a Baptist chapel with an early plan form that remains in relation to its burial ground.
