Description

Leeswood Hall is a Grade II* listed building featuring a northwest garden front that is two storeys high and consists of two plus four plus two bays, with the original end bays slightly advanced. The structure is made of cement rendered red brick with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs topped with rendered stacks. A heavy moulded cornice projects over giant Corinthian pilasters at the corners, and there is a balustraded parapet above the central bays. The building has an overall sill band, lugged architraves, and segmental pediments over the ground floor windows, which have stone plinth aprons. The windows are small-pane Regency sash types, and there is a later porch positioned towards the right. Fluted cornice brackets are set into the walls between the upper outer bays. The right elevation mirrors this design across its four bays, while the left flank was awaiting reconstruction at the time of the survey in 1996. The rear angle features banded quoins and an added brick service wing.

Inside, the hall retains some original plasterwork from the 1720s, along with panelled doors and window splays. There are marble chimney pieces with curved angles and carved keyblocks, including one in the main reception room that features a carved arched dolphin, the emblem of the Wynne family. The principal suite of public rooms and the staircase hall exhibit a Regency style with reeded architraves and restrained plasterwork, highlighted by a fine imperial staircase with an iron balustrade. The rear drawing room has a segmental plasterwork ceiling. The current kitchen was formerly a library and contains an 18th-century marble fireplace with a keystone. The billiard room, which may have been the former servants' hall, has a stone flagged floor and features a re-used 17th-century wooden fireplace and overmantle, decorated with strapwork detailing and the carved date 1667. The upper floor is accessed via a spinal corridor.
