Description
Halkyn Library Hall is a simple Tudor-style building that features a main hall and a slightly lower block to the west, both constructed of rubble stone with rock-faced quoins and mullioned windows. The building has a slate roof with overhanging eaves. The main hall is distinguished by its four-light windows, with the southern elevation showcasing four windows arranged in a grouping of two in the center and one at each end. Originally, the two central windows were flanked by battered buttresses; the right-side buttress remains, while the left-side buttress is hidden by a small gabled wing that has been added. This wing also partially conceals an original lateral stone stack.
On the eastern gable end, there is a lower porch that serves as the original entrance, featuring double boarded doors on the northern side and a two-light window in the gable. Above the porch, the hall boasts a wide four-light window. The northern wall of the main hall has three four-light windows grouped towards the center, and to the right of these is an added doorway flanked by battered buttresses that support a concrete canopy. The lintel of this doorway is dated 1951 and it also has double boarded doors.
The northern side of the lower block includes a four-light window offset to the right. Its western wall contains a four-light window on the left and a boarded door under a lintel to the right of center. The southern wall features three two-light windows and a single-light window to the right of center.
Inside, the main range is divided by a central moveable wood-panelled screen. Above this moveable section is a tie beam with a king post and curved struts, all infilled with boarding. The main range has a six-bay roof supported by trusses on wooden wall posts, though this is concealed by a modern ceiling at collar-beam level.
