Description

Theatr Clwyd is an arts and theatre complex built in a Modern style. The building is steel-framed, faced with soft red brick, and features extensive glazing and lead roofs. The leadwork is wrapped over the wall heads, creating a distinctive capping to the brickwork.

The complex comprises a series of irregularly massed and interlinked blocks arranged in a roughly rectangular east-west plan, mirroring the various functional elements within the building. The main entrance is located on the right side of the main elevation, with glazed doors set beneath a leaded fascia that projects from a continuous grid of glazing. A similar glazed block, housing the staircase, also projects, contrasting with the more solid brick walls elsewhere. Behind the entrance and staircase block, a bar, the main auditorium, and the fly tower are progressively stepped up in elevation. Additional theatre facilities are grouped to the side and rear in primarily brick blocks, punctuated by areas of glazing.

The complex layout reflects the multiple facilities originally included, such as two theatres and a former television studio. It is loosely organised into zones, with the two theatres, the entrance foyer (though the layout has been altered), and the main visitor circulation areas – including a first-floor gallery – as the principal public spaces. Other public areas and supporting facilities are located towards the rear and side. The main entrance foyer has stairwells on either side, leading to the auditorium behind, which is situated at a higher level. The auditorium has a simple layout with curving side walls lined with moulded ceramic acoustic tiles, designed to optimise sightlines and acoustics. The Emlyn Williams Theatre is a square space with removable seating and a narrow balcony on three sides. Dressing rooms, wardrobe, and workshop accommodation are located towards the rear of the complex, including a full-size paint frame for vertically painting stage sets and backdrops.
