Description

The War Memorial, built between 1919 and 1920 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott of London, is a large sandstone obelisk topped with a gabled apex. Below the apex is an ogee-headed, moulded niche featuring a crocketted finial and decorative pilasters on either side. Inside the niche is a sculpted figure of Christ on the Cross. In front of the monument, there is a moulded base and low, coped walls. The rear wall, which flanks the obelisk, displays the names of those who fell in the Great War. The base of the obelisk is inscribed with "Gilbert G Scott ARA Architect." There are also later inset tablets that record the names of those who fell in the Second World War. The memorial is accessed by returned steps leading up to the enclosure.
