Description

The Dovecote and adjoining range at Mostyn Hall is a notable structure consisting of a dovecote and a long two-storey range added to the northeast. The dovecote is a compact three-storey building made of rubble stone and topped with a slate roof. It features coped gables and a square ridge ventilator with a pyramidal roof and finial. The northwest side has a central entrance with a boarded door and a timber lintel, flanked by infilled ventilation slits. To the right of the entrance, there is a possible earlier opening with a voussoir head. A studded door on the first floor is offset to the right and sits under a segmental head made of stone voussoirs. The southwest gable includes a small opening that has been infilled with red brick, indicating signs of an earlier opening, while the southeast side has no openings.

The adjoining two-storey range is also constructed of rubble stone and covered with a slate roof. On the southeast side, there is a wide gable to the right that features a stone tablet with a shield, noting that part of the range was rebuilt in 1942 after bombing. Below the tablet, there are full-width boarded doors, and above them, a three-light mullioned window. To the left, the range has two-light mullioned windows with large panes, most of which have been renewed, along with boarded doors. The centre of the ground floor has a 17th-century moulded stone doorcase with a square head leading to a through-passage. To the right, there are two doors and a window, while to the left, there are two original mullioned windows, double boarded doors, and another window. The upper storey features seven small two-light mullioned windows.

On the northwest side of the range, there is a wide lean-to porch added to the right of centre, which has pronounced stepped copings on the gables, each with a tall segmental-headed window. To the right, there is a two-light metal casement window with a boarded loft hatch above. To the left, the doorway to the through-passage matches the style of the southeast side. There is also a gabled loft doorway to the left with stable doors, a metal-framed window to the right, and a vent to the left. The former barn is located at a right angle to the far left.

Inside the dovecote, there are two chamfered cross-beams with cut-stops, and it retains ledges for nesting boxes.
