Description
Alton Murphy Opticians Premises is a three-storey building constructed of limestone rubble with a yellow brick gabled facade and sandstone quoins. It features a slate roof with simple bargeboards on the front and northwest gables. The facade retains part of its late 19th-century shopfront, which includes a pedimented entrance on the right and the remains of a similar entrance on the left. The right entrance has a 20th-century part-glazed door with a rectangular overlight. Panelled pilasters with plain angled capitals support a continuous moulded cornice, with the fascia recessed below. The later part-glazed entrance is set back between plain-glazed shop windows that have a panelled dado section.
The first and second floors are symmetrical, featuring a two-storey canted wooden bay window in the center and narrow flanking sashes on the outer bays of each floor. All sashes are plain, with the outer ones having cambered heads.
The left return, facing northwest, is partly gabled and has plain late 19th-century sashes on the ground floor, along with two entrances on the left side, both with segmental heads. The far left entrance features a large access arch. The upper floors of the right-hand section have earlier 19th-century sashes, with 12-pane and 6-pane windows, the former being unhorned. Beyond this section, there are windows on three floors with plain sashes and brown brick surrounds, although the ground floor window is blocked.
The interior was not inspected during the survey.
