Description

H.M. Stanley Hospital is a simple classical building constructed in the 19th century. It features a two-storey, 11-window symmetrical front made of squared rubble. The design includes paired bays that project forward, with gable pediments on both the left and right sides of a central three-window entrance. There are additional entrances on the return walls, although the one on the right is blocked. The building has a hipped slate roof and red brick chimney stacks topped with stone cornices. Stone gable parapets, a first-floor cill band, and a plinth add to its architectural detail.

The windows are small-pane sash types, arched below, with modern windows flanking the half-glazed entrance. One arch on the left side has been filled in. The rear of the building is made of rubble and also features small-pane sash windows. The return walls include loggias that partly enclose southern courtyards, which remain relatively unaltered to the southwest. The kitchens are located in a central octagon, with a four-bay Gothic chapel at the rear that has stepped three-light early English gable end windows. To the north, there are flanking dining rooms, as well as former stables and a vagrants ward. The hospital has undergone many modern additions and alterations.
