Description
The Translator's Memorial is an octagonal tower built in the perpendicular Gothic style, dating from the 19th century. It stands on a stepped plinth and is loosely inspired by the Eleanor Crosses, constructed from Hollington and Ancaster stone. At the top, there is a crucifix finial over a lantern cupola, featuring ogee-headed iron grilled openings and symbols from the New Testament. Narrow flying buttresses with finials extend below the top stage and support statues of Bishop Morgan, contemporary bishops, and other advisors involved in the translation, all housed within ogee-headed niches. Below these statues are plain inscribed green marble tablets and Bishop Morgan's seal. An embossed inscription at the base states, "This Tercentenary Memorial of the Bible into Welsh by Bishop Morgan ad 1588 was erected by national subscription."
