Description

Rosslyn is a Tudor-style school building, said to be dated 1857, designed by H John Fairclough of St Asaph, with plans recorded in 1862. It is a single-storey, asymmetrical structure with four bays, incorporating a two-storey, two-window house at the left end, which features an advanced gable bay. This is balanced by a broader gable end for the school hall at the right end. The building is constructed from snecked hammer-dressed rubble with freestone dressings, including quoins, gable parapets, and around the window and door openings, as well as a plinth. The roofs are slate with stone chimney stacks and cappings, and there are cross roofs over the gable-ended bays.

The left gable has a blocked attic, while the right gable features a punched trefoil above a three-light east elevation hall window with apex finials. The central part of the front has a four-light square-headed window flanked by pointed arch entrances with half-glazed doors. The gabled bay of the house has bipartite windows, and there are similar tripartite windows set back to the left.

The left gable end is finished in random coursed rubble and has a sash window above the entrance. A parallel range set back to the left extends with similar detailing and a modern window. The rear elevation is mixed, with a steeper slate roof and small pane sash windows on the house. The right side gable end has a hall window similar to that on the front.

The front of the building retains Gothic traceried iron railings and a gate on a low rubble wall. Inside, the hall features arched braced trusses in a four-bay layout, ceiled at collar level, with diagonally set trusses spanning the two central bays and a small pane glazed partition in the middle, along with a carved bracket corbel.
