Description
Stansty Cottage, along with its attached farm buildings and front retaining wall, dates from the 18th century and is built into a steeply rising site. The house itself is composed of two- or three-story blocks constructed primarily of cream-painted rubble stone, with a brick wing to the left. The roofs are slate, with projecting verges supported by brackets. A large brick ridge stack is situated at the rear against one of the outbuildings.
The main part of the house is a wide, three-story gable-fronted range, positioned in front of a lower, narrower gable-fronted range set to the right. A three-story brick wing, with its gable end facing east, adjoins the main range to the left and is connected to the farm building range. Most windows are wooden casements with two lights and small panes, the corners of the lights curved. These have replaced earlier margin-glazed casements. The entrance is on the east side of the narrower gabled range, accessible by stone steps from the road. This elevation features a pair of stone four-centred arches. The left-hand arch contains a six-panel door with small-pane sidelights, topped with a fanlight featuring gothic glazing, while the right-hand arch contains a larger two-light window with a similar gothic-glazed light above. The west elevation has a casement window to the upper story, and the tall gable end facing the road has no openings. A large casement window is situated to the front of the main block, to the left of the entrance, set beneath a four-centred arch of stone voussoirs with gothic glazing above. A smaller two-light casement, formerly with gothic glazing, is located in the gable of the second floor. A small four-pane window with a segmental stone head is on the east side of the main block to the second floor. The west side of the main block has a two-light casement window on the ground, first, and second floors. The east wing is three-stories tall with a rendered lean-to under a slate roof, featuring a large two-light casement window. French doors, matching the style of the windows, are located at the end of the lean-to. The first and second floors of the wing have two-light casements set within cambered brick heads. The east gable end of the wing has a two-light casement under a flat head towards the right, with the first and second floors featuring two windows each, separated by narrow single lights under flat heads.
A high retaining wall of random stone runs along the front of the property, facing the road, and is topped with plain iron railings to the right and, higher and overgrown with vegetation, to the left. A doorway under a four-centred arch of stone voussoirs contains an iron gate with plain uprights and scrollwork. Stone steps lead up at a right angle to the right, providing access to the house and garden.
Attached to the house is a large, L-shaped outbuilding, located within the grounds of Brynhyfryd 6th Form Centre. The south range is constructed of random stone on a high, battered plinth with a slate roof and a small brick ridge stack. The west range is partly brick, also with a slate roof. The south elevation, left of the east wing of Stansty Cottage, exhibits brick infill and blocked openings, now with timber slats. The east gable end is rendered, and a garden retaining wall continues to the east. A later brick front characterizes the visible portion of the west range, displaying infilled pitching eyes and a porch projection with double boarded doors. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected.
