Description

The former coach house in the grounds of Plas Newydd is a single-storey and attic L-plan building dating from the 18th century. It features a slate roof and has a cobbled yard to the left, enclosed by a screen wall. The long arm of the 'L' showcases much applied timberwork on the outer walls, presented in a less contrived manner than that of the main house, with quatrefoil banding.

The asymmetrical gable end has a deeply recessed pointed arch doorway with a Gothic door, while the lean-to on the right includes a boarded and studded door with an implied semicircular hoodmould. The cross range of the building is taller and constructed of whitewashed rubble on the outer walls. The gable end facing northwest features a tall round-arched loft doorway flanked by two smaller doorways, with two circular openings below that are now bricked up, and a fully infilled pointed arch doorway between them.

The return wall to the left, facing northeast, has a cross gable with a lancet window. Inside the courtyard, the whitewashed rubble gable end on the left displays simple applied timberwork, ornate bargeboards, a pointed loft door, and cross frame windows flanking the ground floor doorway. To the right, there are half-glazed carriage or garage doors.

The rubble screen wall has an acutely pointed arch over the entry, with red brick voussoirs and a carved figurehead of Edward Edwards at the apex, above a datestone inscribed "E E E 1778." Stone head stops are located near the base of the arch.
